Educating Environmental Advocates: The Hudson School Explores NHSA

Today was a day of exploration and discovery at the North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) as we welcomed a group of enthusiastic middle school students from The Hudson School. Led by their dedicated environmental science teacher, Brian Dellett, these students embarked on an eye-opening journey to learn about wastewater management and environmental stewardship.

This visit held particular significance as Brian Dellett had previously brought students to NHSA last year. Now, returning with a new group of 7th graders, it was evident that their eagerness and intelligence matched that of their predecessors. Their passion for learning about environmental issues was palpable from the moment they stepped through our doors.

Our state-of-the-art facilities employ a variety of treatment methods to remove pollutants and contaminants from wastewater before it is safely discharged back into the environment. From primary sedimentation to biological filtration, each step of the treatment process plays a crucial role in ensuring the cleanliness and safety of our water supply.

But wastewater management is not just about treatment—it's also about education and outreach. NHSA is committed to raising awareness about the importance of responsible water use and pollution prevention. Through community engagement initiatives, public outreach events, and educational programs like today's visit, we aim to empower residents with the knowledge and tools they need to protect our water resources for future generations.

During their visit, the students watched a presentation about NHSA and the plant, viewed informative videos about what not to flush, and walked around the plant. These activities provided them with valuable insights into the complexities of wastewater management and the importance of environmental conservation.

One of the highlights of the visit was the interactive discussions led by NHSA experts, where the students actively engaged in conversations about responsible waste management, pollution prevention, and the importance of community stewardship in preserving our environment. Through these discussions and hands-on activities, the students gained a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of human activities and environmental health.

After their tour of NHSA's facilities, the students took part in a practical exercise aimed at highlighting the impact of pollution on our waterways. Armed with gloves and trash bags, they ventured out onto the nearby pier to collect litter and debris, gaining firsthand experience of the environmental challenges facing our communities.

At NHSA, we are committed to empowering the next generation of environmental leaders. By providing students with immersive learning experiences and opportunities for hands-on engagement, we aim to inspire a sense of environmental stewardship and responsibility. Collaborations with schools like The Hudson School allow us to cultivate a new generation of advocates who are passionate about protecting our planet and ensuring a sustainable future for all.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Brian Dellett and The Hudson School for their ongoing partnership and dedication to environmental education. Together, we are shaping the environmental advocates of tomorrow and working towards a healthier, more sustainable world.
