NHSA Combined Sewer Infrastructure Repairs & Upgrades: Hoboken Traffic Impacts Starting Dec. 9, 2024
We’ll begin critical repairs and upgrades to the combined sewer infrastructure at the intersection of Henderson Street and Observer Highway starting Monday, December 9th. This essential project is expected to last approximately six weeks and will improve capacity and system reliability in the area.
Project Scope
The work includes:
Replacing an outdated wooden box culvert with a modern pre-cast concrete culvert to enhance capacity.
Installing new pre-cast concrete sewer manholes to improve infrastructure durability and accessibility.
Traffic Impacts
To safely complete this project, the following road closures and traffic adjustments will be in effect:
Daytime Closures (8 a.m. - 8 p.m., Monday-Sunday):
Newark Street/Observer Highway will be closed eastbound between Madison and Henderson Streets.
Westbound lanes will be closed between Henderson and Grove Streets.
Nighttime Closures (8 p.m. - 8 a.m., Monday-Sunday):
Newark Street/Observer Highway will be closed eastbound between Grove and Henderson Streets.
Westbound lanes will remain open during this time.
24/7 Traffic Adjustment:
Vehicles traveling northbound on Henderson Street from Jersey City into Hoboken will not be able to make a left turn onto Newark Street. All traffic will be directed to turn right onto eastbound Observer Highway.
Detour Plans and Safety Measures
Hoboken and Jersey City Police Officers will be on-site daily (8 a.m. - 8 p.m.) to assist with detours, traffic control, and pedestrian safety.
Detour and variable messaging signs will be placed to guide motorists.
Temporary no-parking signs will be posted in advance of any restrictions.
Collaborative Efforts
NHSA is coordinating closely with the City of Hoboken, Hoboken Police Department, Office of Emergency Management (OEM), and local engineers to monitor the traffic plan and make adjustments as needed.
