NHSA and NJDEP Collaborate: First Agreement of Its Kind in New Jersey Ensures a Cleaner Hudson River

HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY (FEBRUARY 6, 2024) — The North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) is pleased to announce its recent partnership with The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) in executing an Administrative Consent Agreement (ACA). This significant agreement, formalized at NHSA’s Hoboken headquarters, underscores our commitment to preserving the cleanliness and quality of the Hudson River.

Serving the municipalities of Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City, and West New York, NHSA plays a vital role in environmental stewardship. The ACA specifically addresses areas serviced by the Adams Street Wastewater Treatment Plant, focusing on NHSA’s Combined Sewer Overflow Long Term Control Plan (CSO LTCP). Initiated by NJDEP, this plan aims to reduce CSO discharges into the Hudson River while minimizing disruption and cost.

Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette of NJDEP commends NHSA’s proactive approach: “Through this historic agreement, NHSA demonstrates its commitment to investments in technologies and strategies that protect public health, the environment, and reduce flooding. We are proud to partner with NHSA in these efforts.”

Dr. Richard J. Wolff, NHSA’s Executive Director, highlights the collaborative effort behind the LTCP: “Our staff worked diligently to develop a plan that progressively improves the Hudson River’s water quality. With NJDEP approval, NHSA has already begun implementing projects included in the LTCP, such as the construction at Hoboken’s Northwest Resiliency Park.”

Spanning over a 25-year timeframe, the LTCP includes projects to expand treatment plant capacity and build detention facilities to manage stormwater effectively. Dr. Wolff expresses gratitude for the State’s support, emphasizing the program’s affordability and grant assistance.

NHSA remains steadfast in its mission to provide reliable and environmentally responsible wastewater services.
